A Big Challenge Doesn’t Have to Negate Nostalgia and Belonging

The biggest challenge for many people may be the last several weeks of the calendar year. It is indeed a time full of nostalgia and festive gatherings. Much of what most people hope to experience during the celebrations between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day will contribute to the nostalgia that will undoubtedly recur around this time in the years that follow. And it is to be expected that this time of year will include both anticipated and unanticipated events for loved ones looking to make the most of their time together.

While we hope for a season absent of sadness and misfortune, there is never a guarantee that an unforeseen loss, affliction, or tragedy will not knock at our door. Because the unexpected can occur any time of year, including the holidays, there is good reason the season of giving includes giving one’s time to others to ease discomfort and foster belonging as an essential aspect of the period spanning from November to early January.

Consider, for instance, a family that came together in the face of sadness following the loss of a cherished aunt during the Thanksgiving holiday week. Such an occurrence is never a preferred option during the holiday season, let alone any time of year. But being with loved ones was the very thing that provided that comfort and support that’s most needed when anyone loses a family member. It contributes to one’s nostalgia for comfort and a sense of belonging. And attending the 50th birthday celebration of a beloved cousin, a couple of days after Christmas, which brought loved ones together who hadn’t seen each other for quite some time, made for a memorable Yuletide celebration that goes well beyond the holiday experience of opening wrapped presents. Indeed, the opportunity to spend quality time with those close to us is the greatest gift to be received with sincere gratitude.

Hoping everyone’s holiday was filled with love, joy, comfort, belonging, and remembrance. And wishing all a healthy and blessed New Year.
